If you bring your family with you and have children who haven’t completed their education yet, you will need to enrol them in a school.

The Portuguese education system is divided in:

  • Pre-school Education/Kindergarten (children from 3 to 6 years old - optional);

  • Basic Education (6 to 15 years old):

    • First Cycle (1st – 4th grade: mandatory);

    • Second Cycle (5th – 7th grade: mandatory);

    • Third Cycle (7th – 9th grade: mandatory)

  • Secondary Education (15 to 18 years old: 10th – 12th grade: mandatory);

  • Higher education is optional and available for students who have completed a secondary education course or obtained a legally equivalent qualification.

The school year usually starts in September and ends around mid-June, divided between two to three terms. There are two holiday breaks during the school year: Christmas break and Easter Break.

From preschool to higher education, you can opt for a public school (education is free except for Higher Education) or a private school.

Public school education is organised in school groups, and each group includes pre-school, basic and secondary schools, usually located near each other. Parents are requested to enrol their children in the school nearest to their home.

The curricular programmes, until 9th grade, are more general, with more vocational training being introduced from the 10th grade (secondary education).

You can consult the study programmes of pre-school, basic education and secondary education at the “Direção Geral da Educação” (General Direction of Education) website:
